The Sheut, often translated as "shadow," is another intriguing and essential aspect of the ancient Egyptian concept of the soul. The Sheut was believed to have protective qualities. It was linked to the life force and vitality of the person, sometimes seen as a guardian aspect that stayed close to the individual. The Sheut was closely associated with the Ren (name). The belief was that as long as a person's name was remembered and spoken, their Sheut would continue to exist, thus maintaining their presence and influence.
We observe this protective quality in Halloran, who serves as a guardian figure for the entire family, particularly for Danny. Remarkably, Halloran knows Danny's name, he refers to Danny as "Dock" prior to their conversation about the shining in the kitchen. This choice of nickname is not arbitrary; "Dock" resonates with the concept of the Akh in ancient Egyptian belief. In these traditions, the afterlife's success hinges on the integration of two essential aspects: the Kah and the Ba. When these elements are perfectly unified, they form the Akh, symbolizing a harmonious and successful existence beyond death.
In this context, Halloran refers to Danny as "Dock", which is nearly an acronym formed from Danny and Jack—combining the first letter of Danny and the last two letters of Jack.
This tension underscores the importance of names and their symbolic significance within the story. To put this into perspective, consider the names of the actors in the film.
For instance, Jack is played by an actor named Jack, and Danny is portrayed by Danny—although the actor’s full name is Danny Lloyd. Notably, Lloyd is another key character in the film, and given that there are relatively few significant characters, the coincidence is revealing. It is also worth considering that as Jack meets Lloid in The Gold Room, Lloid serves him a glass of Jack Daniels, while Jack speaks about his inability to deal with Danny.
Names are crucial in this narrative, especially for Halloran, who embodies the Sheut (shadow). Recall the line where Halloran comments to Wendy:
I've heard your husband calling you Winnifred.
Are you a 'Winny' or ‘afraidy’, Miss Torrance?
This kind of remark aligns with the role of the Sheut, who places great importance on names. For the Sheut, names are not just labels but carry deep significance, revealing the true essence of individuals and their roles.
Halloran frequently plays with language, as exemplified by his humorous remark to Danny:
How would you like some eye scream?
A playful twist that highlights his deeper understanding. As the Sheut or shadow, Halloran possesses an intelligence beyond that of ordinary humans. He seems to know everything in advance: Danny’s name, the imminent arrival of the Overlook’s manager and Jack to take Wendy with them, and so the opportunity to discuss "the shining" with Danny.
While Danny also glimpses future events during his vision in the bathroom, he can only do so through Tony. In contrast, Halloran is continuously aware of future events and hidden truths. His awareness extends to knowing about Tony, as evidenced by his comment:
Is Tony the one who tells you things?
Halloran’s profound insight and foresight make his words consistently significant and impactful, reflecting his deep connection to the spiritual and symbolic elements of the story.
Halloran advises Danny not to go into Room 237, stating:
You ain't got any business going on there anyway.
This remark raises a question: why does Halloran suggest that Danny has no business in that room? This will be explored further in later sections, but for now, it's important to consider the role of Tony. From the point Danny enters room 237 onward, Danny is essentially no longer in control of his own actions—Tony takes over and becomes the one managing Danny's experiences and decisions. Tony’s influence will be significant, guiding Danny and handling the situations that will arise.
